Before the Court, the following issue was questioned (text from scotusblog):Whether Miller v. Alabama established a categorical ban on imposing a type of punishment – a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole – on a class of individuals – juvenile offenders – and therefore stated a substantive rule that should be applied retroactively.
